The individual shape and/or appearance of a product are significant competitive factors in many industries, and design registration is an important way to protect these business interests. Products in some sectors are often technically so similar that individual design has become the best way for a product to gain a distinctive profile. The registration holder thereby secures exclusive rights to use the design commercially and may take action to stop infringements.
The protected design may be a product as a whole or a part of a product, its decoration, external packaging, various graphical elements or some other product detail that is an inseparable element. A registered design may also protect various graphical elements such as logos, labels, website user interfaces and icons.
